Celebrating World Environment Day with One Tree Planted

This World Environment Day, we caught up with One Tree Planted to understand the environmental impact of the Michael Hill Foundation’s donations. Since launching our partnership in 2024 and committing to plant up to ten trees for the sale of every LAB. product, we’ve planted over 175,000 trees in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Our goal is to plant 1,000,000 trees by 2030 with the help of One Tree Planted's impactful projects.

What kinds of projects does One Tree Planted support?

We select projects based on their potential for long-term environmental and biodiversity impact, focusing on community well-being and watershed health. We partner with trusted organizations that share our values and have proven success, ensuring each initiative is both ecologically impactful and beneficial to local communities. Our goal is to create lasting positive change through thoughtful project selection.

The Michael Hill Foundation has been supporting projects in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. How did One Tree Planted select these projects?

Australia: One Tree Planted selects projects in Australia based on a set of criteria that align with their mission to support reforestation and environmental restoration efforts. Initiatives like the Rejuvenation Trees project in Western Australia align with these values by restoring the health of local ecosystems, empowering First Nations communities, and promoting long-term environmental stewardship.

New Zealand: One Tree Planted carefully selects projects in New Zealand that prioritize cultural, environmental, and community wellbeing. The Waingake Native Restoration Program, located near the headwaters of the primary water supply for Tairāwhiti/Gisborne and adjacent to the Waingake Waterworks Bush, is vital for preserving the primary forest that supports rare and endangered species.

Canada: We carefully choose reforestation and environmental restoration projects across Canada that align with our mission. A prime example of this is our project in British Columbia which worked to restore landscapes scarred by the 2017 Plateau Fire. With a strong emphasis on species diversity and climate resilience, we select native trees such as hybrid spruce and Douglas-fir to not only bring balance to the ecosystem but also to foster long-term biodiversity.

So far, the Michael Hill Foundation has helped to plant 176,654 trees. What kind of environmental benefit has this created?

Australia: Regenerative agriculture practices will further enhance carbon sequestration, supporting efforts to combat climate change. The establishment of habitat within the planting area will create a sanctuary for local wildlife, forming vital corridors that connect to other forested areas and support biodiversity.

New Zealand: The natural regeneration of native vegetation at Waingake is resulting in improvements to the forest's structure and composition. We expect a significant recovery of native wildlife, particularly forest birds, as they benefit from reduced competition, lower predation pressures, and enhanced habitat quality.

Canada: The benefits of our efforts are far-reaching, encompassing the provision of vital food sources, medicinal plants, atmospheric carbon sequestration, regulation of the hydrological cycle; and the creation of crucial wildlife habitats. Species that will benefit from these efforts include black and grizzly bears, moose, cougars, snowshoe hares and bald eagles.
