The Michael Hill Story

Michael Hill was first established in 1979, in the town of Whangarei, New Zealand.

At the heart of our brand is a real-life love story between Sir Michael and Lady Christine Hill, which began many years earlier. Together, through their labour of love, they opened the first Michael Hill store to pursue their dream of making fine jewellery accessible to all.

Customers drawn in by intriguing window displays, hand-drawn catalogues, an inviting store entrance and modern layout, were welcomed to come inside and try on pieces as they desired; a destination truly dedicated to helping everyone mark life's most meaningful moments.

In the 1980s, Michael Hill expanded to Australia, and it is here that our head office and in-house workshop of master artisans are established. We continue to proudly champion local craft, with a range of our fine jewellery made by our artisans in Australia.

Now, Michael Hill has grown to encompass over 200 stores across three countries: New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. Each year we help thousands of people connect with the perfect piece, for themselves or for a loved one, and we are privileged to play a role in each and every story. Forever inspired by our heritage, as we have evolved our commitment to quality, craft, and creativity remains as strong as ever.
