How to Choose a Men’s Wedding Band

Discover our guide to men’s wedding ring styles, materials, and sizing, to help you choose the perfect one.

Symbolic of your love and commitment to another, your wedding band is also a piece you’ll wear for a lifetime; making it one of your most significant jewellery purchases. Discover our guide to men’s wedding ring styles, materials, and sizing, to help you choose the perfect one for your personal taste, lifestyle, and budget.

1. Consider Your Style

As a piece you will wear day in, day out, your wedding band should first and foremost align with your personal taste and style. Men’s wedding bands are crafted in a range of designs, silhouettes, and materials.

Is your preference for a plain metal band or one with a diamond or gemstone feature? Consider if a fine band or bold, statement width is more your style. There are also subtle design details that can make your wedding band feel unique to you, such as polished or brushed metal finishes, two-tone styles, bevelled edges, and domed or flat silhouettes.

Finally, discuss with your partner whether you would prefer matching or similar wedding bands, or different styles to reflect your individual tastes.

2. Choose Your Materials

Hand in hand with the style of your men’s wedding band, is the material it’s crafted from. Gold wedding bands are a timeless choice, but you can also choose from a range of alternative metals to find the right band for your style and your budget.

  • Gold: solid gold is a classic, heirloom-worthy option for your wedding band. Gold will not tarnish, and with the right care, it will retain its beauty for a lifetime, developing a unique patina as it ages.

  • Silver: a more affordable precious metal option, sterling silver offers a contemporary, reflective brightness. Over time, silver can naturally oxidise and develop a unique patina, lending it a vintage appearance. Silver requires some care to avoid tarnishing; it’s recommended to wear silver often, which is perfect for a wedding band, and to clean and polish it regularly.

  • Tungsten: tungsten is a highly durable and scratch resistant metal, making it perfect for those with an active lifestyle or who work with their hands. An affordable alternative to precious metal bands, tungsten offers a luxurious, heavyweight feel and will retain its unique lustre for many years.

  • Titanium: another affordable and chic alternative to precious metals, our Black Titanium wedding bands are lightweight, durable, and hypoallergenic. While strong, titanium is slightly more prone to scratches than tungsten; keep this in mind if you work with your hands.

Note that due to the hard nature of the metals, titanium and tungsten rings cannot be resized. Discover our guide to ring sizing below, so you can purchase your wedding band in your perfect fit.

  • Diamonds: for a subtle – or statement – point of difference, explore men’s wedding bands with diamonds. Our range includes natural diamonds, laboratory-grown diamonds (which exhibit the same level of hardness as natural diamonds) and black diamonds for a distinctive aesthetic. Black diamonds, while still extremely hard and resistant to scratches, are more vulnerable to sharp knocks due to their high number of inclusions. Keep this in mind if you have an active lifestyle or work with your hands.

3. Find Your Perfect Size

The final step in choosing your perfect wedding band is ensuring it’s the right fit. Your men’s wedding band should fit comfortably, so that it’s not too tight but doesn’t slide over your knuckle. You should be able to remove your ring by sliding it off with slight resistance.

For a deeply significant piece such as your wedding band, we always recommend professional ring sizing if possible – especially for titanium and tungsten rings, which are unsuitable for resizing. Visit your nearest Michael Hill store for a professional fitting and to explore our range.

If selecting a ring online, you can check your ring size at home. Measure the diameter of a ring that you already own (which you wear on the same finger as your wedding band); or measure the circumference of your finger by wrapping a string around it, then laying the string flat against a tape measure or ruler to discover the measurement in millimetres. Then, use our Ring Size chart to convert your measurement into your ring size.
