Believed to have originated in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, the name ‘belcher’ is said to come from belcher scarves, tied together with a ring design similar to the links of a belcher chain. Others believe the belcher chain was named after 19th century bare-knuckle boxer James ‘Jem’ Belcher, who was Champion of All England from 1800 to 1805.
A belcher chain consists of round, oval or D-shaped links, usually with one side curved and the other flat. Also known as a rolo chain, it’s a simple, timeless and highly adaptable piece of jewellery.
Belcher chains come in a wide range of sizes and precious metals. A gold belcher chain has a classic, luxurious look, while a silver belcher chain is sleek and modern with a reflective shine. A belcher necklace with a heart-shaped padlock, on the other hand, makes a bold statement, as well as provides a sentimental touch.
A belcher chain is one of the strongest chains on the market, thanks to the flat surface area of its links. This makes it harder for links to slide past each other and creates more contact points, increasing its strength. Even thin and lightweight belcher chains can be quite durable thanks to this unique link design.
Looking for the right chain to showcase a special pendant? The belcher chain necklace can be worn on its own as a statement piece or to showcase a pendant. We recommend a solid chain for extra strength and support to display your pendant. Find out more about caring for your chain here.
Looking for some variety? Belcher chains can vary in length, from a 45cm chain that sits nicely on the collarbone all the way to an 80cm drop. Enjoy your belcher chain amidst other types by layering chains of varying sizes. Pair a gold belcher necklace with rose gold or silver chains to create a striking contrast between metals, or a long belcher chain with a choker of a similar type.
The terms belcher chain and belcher necklace are often used interchangeably. However, there is a subtle difference between the two – while a belcher chain can be worn on its own and refer to other styles of jewellery (such as a belcher bracelet), a belcher necklace can have a pendant or charm (like a heart) hanging from it. Add depth with a belcher necklace in gold or opt for a silver belcher necklace for that glossy and sleek aesthetic.
Belcher necklaces can often be found in shorter lengths and complement any outfit. Whether you enjoy a pendant with your belcher necklace, or prefer a thinner chain, you’ll find a range of options at Michael Hill, shop online or find a store near you.
