Black diamonds can be naturally occurring, known as fancy black diamonds, or their colour may be a result of heat treating. Natural black diamonds get their intense colour from large quantities of mineral inclusions such as graphite, pyrite or hematite, and clusters of amorphous carbon, making each one unique and rare, thus commanding a high price. Because of this rarity, many black diamonds used in jewellery achieve their intense, opaque hue by heat-treating diamonds that are naturally grey or salt-and-pepper in colour due to a large amount of inclusions in the stone.
Although dramatically different in colour, black diamonds have the same chemical composition as white diamonds, but do not reflect light because of their polycrystalline structure.
Like white diamonds, black diamond jewellery can adapt well to all sorts of styles, especially when it comes to making neutral tones pop and elevating casualwear. Wear a black diamond necklace for a sleek and refined look, a black diamond bracelet with plain gold and silver chains for contrast, or a black diamond watch to make a bold statement.
Black diamond jewellery is the ultimate symbol of individuality and avant-garde style. They are believed to represent courage and originality, as well as an inner strength.
Rating a 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, black diamonds were regarded in the 19th and 20th centuries as an ideal gemstone for industrial use. However, in recent years, black diamonds have become coveted for their glossy sparkle and associations with the ethereal, and are a great option for those looking for a more edgy and alternative look when it comes to their gemstones, making pieces like black diamond necklaces, bracelets and black diamond pendants sought after.
Much like white diamonds, black diamonds are also symbolic of a long and everlasting love, along with purity and fidelity, representing a strong emotional connection with others.
