Sapphire is a precious gemstone. It’s a type of corundum, which is the second hardest mineral on the Mohs scale after diamonds. For this reason, sapphires are an excellent choice for rings. Just like diamonds, sapphires form deep beneath the earth’s surface from a combination of heat and pressure.
Sapphires are mostly known and loved for their deep blue colour, but they naturally form in a range of hues, from pink to white to yellow to green. The exception is the red variety of corundum – these are called rubies.
You can also find created sapphires, which are developed in controlled laboratory conditions by replicating the natural process by which sapphires grow.
Sapphire is the birthstone for September, and this beautiful gemstone is believed to symbolise wisdom, serenity, and focus.
The sapphire is a type of gemstone, and is not a diamond. Although both are minerals, sapphires are made up of a variety of corundum, while diamonds are made of carbon. Both gems are beloved by many for their distinctive beauty.
Diamonds are commonly known for their glacial sparkle, while sapphires are famed for their rich, velvety shade of blue, and both form in a wide array of colours. They’re both incredibly versatile, able to pair well with a wide range of metals, and are absolutely stunning when combined together in a sapphire engagement ring, sapphire necklace or sapphire earrings.
Whatever you wish to wear will no doubt complement the beautiful blue of a sapphire. For elegant-casual, match a gold necklace with a subtle sapphire pendant with a white shirt or neutral tone.
A pair of sapphire and diamond earrings in a regal halo setting with matching sapphire rings is an elegant choice for formal wear like evening gowns. Gold rings with sapphire can also elevate a cool and casual style, like blue jeans and a leather jacket or a little black dress, accenting the outfit without overpowering it.
Sapphires work well with other shades of blue and vibrant citrus tones, and look especially beautiful when paired with metals like white gold and yellow gold.
Sapphire jewellery refers to any piece of fine jewellery—like rings, earrings and necklaces—that feature sapphire gemstones.
The sapphire is an incredibly popular gem thanks to its classic beauty, strength and ocean-like hues. With subtle variations in tone, no two sapphires are alike, making them a gemstone to treasure.
The cut of a sapphire can enhance its appearance. An emerald cut creates flashes of light, with its rectangular shape and wide facet producing more surface area, a round cut is truly classic and maximises sparkle, while a pear cut maintains a classic and timeless elegance.
Sapphires also work within a number of settings. Sapphire earrings in a halo setting are particularly popular thanks to their vintage-inspired feel. A diamond and sapphire necklace offers unique glamour with a hint of colour. A pavé setting, on the other hand, can give any piece a bold yet subtle touch of sparkle.
Beautiful and timeless, sapphire jewellery is the perfect addition to any collection.
Sapphire jewellery makes a stunning statement and can be worn alone with striking effect, or styled with other jewellery in a way that represents your personal style.
Sapphires look beautiful set in both sterling silver and gold, and pair well with diamonds in earrings, bracelets and rings. A sapphire ring is a popular choice as an engagement ring, and can be stacked with a diamond wedding band and eternity ring for added sparkle. A sapphire necklace can also be layered with chain necklaces for an eye catching, modern look. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations when styling your sapphire jewellery, finding a look that captures your personality.
Sapphire gemstones are quite hard wearing, second in hardness only to diamonds, but still need to be worn with care to ensure long lasting shine.
Remove your sapphire jewellery before showering, swimming or cleaning, and store it safely in a jewellery box. Any jewellery worn regularly will be exposed to dirt and oils from the skin, and should be wiped with a jewellery cleaning cloth after wear or cleaned with warm, soapy water on occasion. All sapphire jewellery can be brought into Michael Hill for complimentary, professional cleaning.
While the sapphire is most famously a deep blue colour, it actually comes in a rainbow of colours including green, yellow and pink.
Sapphires are from the corundum family of minerals, and corundum comes in a variety of colours depending on the trace elements that are in the stone. There are no red sapphires, because red corundum is what we know as a ruby!
